Abstract

The wooden icon «Deisis» belongs to the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, and is attributed to Andrei Zugrav (dated 1730). The constituent materials were investigated by non-destructive analysis: X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and microscopy. Investigations have demonstrated the use of common materials for that period, the execution technique being tempera grassa (mixture of pigment, egg yolk and vegetable oil). The primer is based on calcium (possibly calcium carbonate). The pigments used were iron red, lead red (lead minium), orpiment (arsenic sulphide), lead white and iron/manganese black. Gold and silver leaf was used for the aura.
