Abstract

In this article I present the mural painting of the Saint Nicholas church from Branesti, Gorj county, and the need to restore it. The mural painting and the oldest icons date back from 1859. The founder of the church is priest Constantin Cocoroveanu from the village Ionesti. For the restoration of the painting multiple specific interventions are needed: consolidation of the painting layer, consolidation of the sup- port, removing improper repairs and repaintings, grouting the lacu- nae of the support and cromatic integrating the lacunae from the painting layer. I present in the article`s introductory part a few significant data about the curch and its artistic components. Next I will describe the iconographic program, adding the component materials and artis- tic technique. In the closing part I will expose photographs presenting some detail aspects from the testing and preliminary investigations I made for the conservation-restoration methodology I have proposed.
