Elderly care involves caring for and supporting the physical and emotional needs of older people. The theological-psychosocial approach focuses on three essential components: spirituality, psychology and socialization.
Spirituality refers to fostering the awareness that the older person is an important member of the community, there is in their power to fulfill their personal goals and hopes. This component should focus on the elderly's spiritual, culinary needs and their personal contribution to the community.
Psychology is about encouraging older people to address their feelings, thoughts and behaviours. This can be achieved by providing professional counseling and emotional support to help them adapt to change, understand their emotions and find the motivational factors that will help them cope with loss and change as they age.
Socialization aims to engage older people in activities that give them satisfaction and allow them to continue to be part of the community. This includes activities such as support groups, discussions and social gatherings, trips, clubs and other community meetings.
The research in this paper was based on a theological-sociological study based on a questionnaire, in which 30 people from a social assistance center for the elderly were investigated.
In conclusion, this theological and psychosocial approach to the assistance of the elderly showed us how important the spiritual, relational and social assistance offered to them is. It also showed us that providing assistance to an elderly person requires not only knowledge, but also skills, understanding and care.
