Abstract

This material presents the participation of the Orthodox clergy from the territory of the current county of Cluj, at the Great National Assembly, held on December the 1st, 1918, in Alba Iulia, on the issue of the union of Transylvania with Romania. The clergy of all ranks responded to the call of the moment. Bishops and archpriests were appointed full members of the assembly, while a large number of parish priests were elected as representatives either by their communities or by various cultural organizations. Our attention turned to the archpriests Teodor Herman from Dej and Iovian Mureşan from Turda, as well as on the young chaplain Nicodim Cristea as a representative of the archpriest Tuliu Roşescu of Cluj, whose precarious state of health did not allow him to move to Alba Iulia. Among the ordained priests we evoked Aurel Munteanu, future archpriest of Huedin and martyr of the Romanian nation under the Horthy occupation in September 1940, Augustin Cupşa - confessor of the Gherla penitentiary, Samuil Susa and Demetriu Păltineanu, parishes in Frata and Nadăşu. We consider that the personalities men- tioned above make up the typical profile of the Romanian Transylvanian priest from the beginning of the 20th century.
