The study includes an iconographic analysis of the episodes that illustrate the Passion Week in the ”Saint Nicholas” Church at the Probota Monastery, the princely necropolis of Petru Rares.
The painting dates from the 16th century and represents one of the most telling and truthful testimonies of the Moldovan mural art of that time.
The beauty of the compositions, the clarity of the drawing and the forms, the particularly rich chromatics characterize, define and individualize the scenes that follow in the median register of the church nave. At the same time, we mention the 21 iconographic scenes presented: The entrance to Jerusalem, the Washing of the feet, the Last Supper, the Prayer on the Mount of Olives, the Sleep of the Apostles, the Kiss of Judah, Jesus before Annas and Caiaphas, the Denial of Peter and the Judgment of Jesus, the Mocking of Jesus, the Restitution of Money and the Hanging of Judas, Jesus on the Way of Calvary, the Ascension of the Cross, Pilate on horseback in search of the Savior’s cross, and Joseph of Arimathea asking for the body of Jesus, The soldiers sharing the shirt of Christ, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross and the Lamentation of the Savior, the Guard from the Tomb.
